The computer monitors buzzed to life, showing multiple views of the police compound through the cameras the Op team wore. Eric and others of the rescue waited outside the perimeter in SUVs, while the rest snuck into the precinct from the sewage system below. All the members’ locator devices were now live, and I could hear talking through my ear drum.

“They better be glad I like them,” one male member said. “It doesn’t smell like roses down here.”

“Yeah, they owe me,” another agreed.

“Looks like the cavalry’s coming,” Rafi exclaimed.

“Oh, thank goodness,” Susan said.

The virus that I was installing disabled the alarms. The rescue squad crept in from below, but it would be much faster for them and God knows who else to escape from the outside—half the party had been captured. The lights would be out in the facility shortly. Lights out or not, the enforcement would retaliate. It would be slower for everyone to try to climb down through the sewage system.

Letting the team know the plan, I announced through their devices, “Okay everyone, lets stay sharp. I’ll be disabling the lights to buy time. When I kill them, the cell doors will also open, so be ready to haul ass. Mike is gonna blow you a way out.”

“Roger that,” Cade replied.

Stefani’s eyes were glued to the screen. She glanced at me. “This is exciting and scary at the same time. Will they really be able to pull this off?”

“Don’t worry. Our members are well trained. I’m sure they will.”

She gave me a contrite smile. The rescue had just touched down in the precinct, sneaking in successfully. Their cover would be blown soon—they couldn’t invisibly sneak to the cells. The four internal crew entered as close as possible to the block where they were being held. Now it was time to pray that they really could pull this off.

It being late at night did play in our favor—the compound wasn’t as heavily guarded. Two enforcers at the counter next to the cell block where Cade and the other members were had spotted Mike. One male tried to hit the alert alarm, frowning when he came up blank.

Yeah, I took care of that.

His comrade attempted to draw his weapon, but two from the rescue team were faster. Randolph aimed his gun at the officer’s head. Winston held his gun on the other enforcer, while the fourth member of our crew stayed farther back. She was keeping an eye out for anyone coming from the front of the precinct. With the two enforcers contained, Mike continued to the metal door of the cell block. From the internal cameras that I’d tapped into, I spied one of the officers guarding that section coming out.

“One is headed in your direction, Mike,” I relayed.

“Thanks.”

Mike snuck to the side as the enforcer came out the door. Mike acted quickly, swiping his feet from under him. He took his club and hit the officer in the head, knocking him out. The remaining enforcer in the cell block was being distracted by the inmates. I’d already scrambled the codes so that all the doors would open.

“Proceed, Mike. It’s just one, but tread lightly, because he’s armed,” I gave him the okay.

“What’s up on the lights?” Mike asked.

The damn program was taking longer than I’d anticipated. Come on, sucker! “Give it a few more seconds.”

I’d been able to give them a play-by-play thus far, having tapped into the compound’s camera feed. But the cameras in the building were about to crash, along with the lights, so we’d have to rely on the rescue team’s embedded cameras to see what was happening—couldn’t have any trace of them being there. Mike pulled the metal door with ease as to not alert the enforcer. He spotted him not long after Mike entered and got a shot off. Luckily, Mike was prepared, so he was able to dodge it. Wasting no time, Mike launched a smoke canister onto the floor.

Temptation Trials Rebellion (The Tempted Series #2) by B Truly

Blurb:

Can love defeat the greatest temptation … lust?

In a post-apocalyptic nation where the land of the free is now run under a dictatorship, there is one factor that holds the key to keeping world order—love. The new Regime controls the emotions of the heart. It’s their most vital law. At the age of twenty-one, every citizen is forced into an arranged marriage. The only way to escape the arrangement is to enter the Temptation Trials—a government-sponsored reality TV show where the loyalties of the contestants are tested by Tempters and Temptresses who are impossible to resist.

Catalina enters the Trials as a Temptress in hopes that she can win the funds to save her brother. Sahara’s been ridiculed in the eyes of the public. By being a Temptress, she’ll be able to have a fresh start. The Regime promises that if she fulfills her role on the show they will wipe her slate clean.

The problem is that the Trials are rigged for failure. In all the prior seasons, love’s rival, lust, has proven to be more powerful. No contestant has ever won the Temptation Trials and be allowed to stay with their chosen partner. Lutheran Eminence, the world’s dictator, has shown that he’s the ultimate matchmaker.

As the Temptation Ball approaches, conflict is at an all-time high. Most couples are too hurt by betrayal to reconcile. With the odds stacked against them, Kincade and Tobias try to mend their relationships, hoping that the greater good will prevail.

Attempting to uncover the true meaning of love may cost the contestants more than they bargained for—it may cost their souls.

review_edited

Destiny’s Gambit is science-fiction fantasy steampunk novel that take place in outer space. It’s a story about 12-year-old Jake who was searching for answers about his parents who disappeared when he was too young. The story is about good vs bad, friendship, growing up and taking responsibility, accepting destiny and never giving up hope. This book adventurous involving Magis, pirates, ship battles and puzzles set by Jake’s parents and lot of space surfing.

Characters_edited

Jake Flynn had fascination for ships and loved everything about them and so was a great captain when he sailed on the voyage of finding his parents. He never came to terms with his parents disappearance, he had lot of questions about them but no answers from his grandma or uncle. When he received a mysterious signal and then locket with a message from his father he left to find them to unknown world occupied by pirates and different species. I liked the way his turmoil was showed in the book with all emotions. His fears, courage and conscience was presented realistically. I liked his gradual development and the way he took decision and accepted fate.

Starla– I liked this calm nonviolence natured life Magi. Her wisdom in the book were inspiring for both characters and readers of the book. She was very supportive to Jake and I liked the way she handled tantrums of Jehn.

Jehn had seen lot worse in slavery of pirates. She was short tempered and had some problems with Starla. She was smart and had a good survival instinct.

Otto, the old Magi and captain Goldbar both were good fighter and likable characters.

What I liked_edited

World, planets, and descriptions of the places was unique, detailed, and structured creatively with all logics and justifications that a middle grade/young adult readers can easily understand. The voyage, floating of ship, magic and powers, looks of different species were imaginative. The book gave the feeling of Chronicles of Narnia. This was just the first book of the series so there was sufficient overview of the world and I have feeling as the series will progress there will be more to know about this world.

Book was third person narrative. I liked the view point of main character and voice of all other characters, they acted according their age and role which made characters reasonable. They all had their story. Oh I wish there was more mention of Jack’s grandma, she was wonderful lady.

There was right amount of suspense, adventure, and thrill with many unpredictable twists and turns. Most of the time I couldn’t guess characters’ next step. I specifically loved the explanation of characters’ power, their skills and magic in the book.

Climax was full of riddles, exploration, revelations and tense gripping battles. End was great with new friends, responsibility, and purpose; with development of characters and cliffhanger. I wonder what the mystery of Jack’s parents and powers was, where his ship will head next, and what kind of enemies are waiting out there in his next voyage. I would love to continue this series.

why not 5 stars_edited

Can’t exactly point out any negativity in book but it felt like there was something missing or I wanted something more. As it is first book in the series and I have many questions regarding world and mystery so I’m holding back the full rating for next books of the series.

conclusion_edited

Overall, Destiny’s Gambit was fast paced, enjoyable adventurous sci-fi with creative world and smooth writing that all young reader would love to explore.

Excerpt #3:

Goldbar scratched his neck concerned. “Robbing the living be one thing,” he said, “but this be a tomb, we should not be stealing from the dead. It be very bad luck indeed.”

“We are not stealing from anyone,” Starla said as she knelt to look at the bottom of the rock, “what Jake needs was left here for him by his father.”

Goldbar narrowed his eyes and gnashed his teeth a few times, his nose working up and down, unconvinced. “Well, we should not be disturbing the dead either,” he said.

“I am afraid we have little choice if we wish to proceed on this quest,” Otto said.

“It won’t matter either way if we don’t figure out a way to move this stone,” Jake said. He turned to Otto, “I don’t suppose you could melt it?” Otto frowned.

“I suppose I could try, but the molten rock might ooze down and damage the items you seek, not to mention the time it will take to heat this type of rock to the point of melting.”

“Longer than we be having,” Goldbar said, “and the heat would drive us all from this here cave.”

“How did your father do it?” Jehn wondered.

“Well, he was a Corsair, he probably used gravity somehow. I think he had crewman with him too.”

“What about leverage?” Starla offered. “We could place something over a smaller stone and use it to shift the boulder.”

“There be not a piece of metal or lumber on this planet that we could use to shift that there stone,” Goldbar said. “No, there be only one way into this tomb and if it has to be done, ol’ Billy Goldbar must be the one to do it.”

The Durian approached the boulder and for a moment Jake thought he was going to try and push it by himself, but instead he placed his furry hands flat on the surface and rested his head between them. Shutting his eyes, he began to make a strange guttural sound similar to a humming growl. He continued this drone for some time pausing only to breathe. It grew louder and Jake felt the hairs on the back of his neck raise. Louder still and Jake realized the sound was now a resonance building inside the boulder. The gigantic rock began to vibrate. Then sand began to appear where Goldbar’s hands were placed along with hundreds of tiny sparks. He pushed forward, and his hands sank into the stone, more sand falling all around his feet.

“That’s incredible,” Jake said and looked at Starla. She came closer to him to speak softly.

“It seems our good captain is no ordinary Durian,” she said, “but a Flintsinger, a shaper of rock and stone. It’s an ancient discipline known only to them. It’s not done by channeling per say, instead they use the Creator’s energy stored within the rock, and transform it to smaller fragments; sand in this case. He could reshape the rock, but it would take much longer.”

As they watched, Goldbar carved his way through the center of the boulder forming a crude doorway with his hands. Then he pushed through at the bottom and the sand began falling into some kind of hole below. He worked until the opening was large enough for him to step down into. Then the sound stopped and he popped back out, covered with dust and sand from head to toe.

“There be some kind of passage below, alright,” he said as he brushed himself off.

“Captain, that was amazing,” Jake said.

Goldbar worked the sand out of his fur and his mouth curled into a smile. “Don’t be thanking me yet,” he said. “It still be a tomb. There could be an angry ghost waiting for you.”

Jake smiled. “I’ll be careful,” he said and moved to the opening. Goldbar caught his shoulder.

“I’m serious. Dead captains don’t be liking their treasures to be touched. Don’t say ol’ Billy didn’t warn you.”
